webhosting plan : you can get control panel for your domain name, ftp and file mangement from the server.
reseller plan : you can have WHM (webhosting manager) and can make some cpanel for each domain name.
VPS Plan : you manage a server shared with some other VPS plan, here you can build a own WHM and create some WHM.
Dedicated Plan : you manage a sever by yourself.

Here is a link from Wiki for shared web hosting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_hosting
In such way try to learn about all kinds of webhosting you are interested in.

Well, I'd put it like that
shared, reseller, vps and dedicated are different in terms of the amount of resources they offer and your control over the server, on the shared account you have enough resources to host your site, but usually you don't have access to the server and the scripts you can use are installed for you by your host, all the sites hosted on shared accounts use the same amount of CPU, so if one of these sites needs more, another site won't get it. To prevent it temporary automated account suspension system is used.
VPS/dedicated will give all the ability to use the resources of the server and install applications you need to run.
If you are just starting, I guess a shared plan will be quite enough. I think one of the best providers that offer all the types of plans from shared to vps and dedicated are www.GlobalTap.com and www.Hostgator.com.

Agree. The root access to the ordered sources is the biggest difference.

If you don't mind, I will explain it in a simple way :smile2:
    • Shared : You can upload your files, create database,etc... but the features you have got (Like having Cron Tab or not,...) and the number of thems (ie, the maximum number of databases you can create) depend on your host.
    • Reseller : Identical to the shared hosting plan but with higher number of features and of course, higher price. If you have some unused space, bandwidth, databases,etc... you can sell it to some one else and get money off of it.
    • VPS : A server can be divided into multiple smaller server using virtualization software (Cutting software, you say :P) and each of them works separately (Have their own OS,etc...).
    • Dedicated : You actually hire the server for your need, you can do whatever you want with it.

A dedicated server can have some VPSes, a VPS can have some resellers, and a reseller can have some shared.
If there is something else you don't understand, feel free to ask us :popeye:
