Forumotion offers phpBB 2 and 3, while Invision Free offers the free version of invision power board (it's 1.3 if I recall correctly). You just have to make sure which software you prefer. Both providers are good and they won't dissapoint you easily.

My suggestion: go with phpBB 3. It's new and full of nice features, while IPB 1.3 is outdated.

I agree with Spyros, IPB 1.3 is now pretty outdated and may not be able to provide you with enough features so you should go with phpBB 3 instead :smile2: But since you are about to have your own forum up, why not try starting by finding a free host and then install the forum yourself ?
That way you will have complete control of the board and can modify it the way you want :popeye:

Most free hosts, while they provide some respectable webspace, put serious restrictions on your databases. For example, they may limit the maximum size of any database to 10 MB, while they still offer a generous 500 MB for free.

I would not recommend starting a forum with a free hosting plan.

Yup, it sure is getting harder and harder these days to find a 'real' free host. Most of the hosts I have found put ADs on the hosted sites, or restrict certain features until you upgrade to paid plans,etc... which are extremely annoying

However, there are still some good free hosts that have been online for a few years and still doing strong. I believe we can learn a lot more stuffs if we try to install everything by ourselves. Of course, free forum hosts are good ideas if you don't know about webhosting, designing,etc... and want to learn first.
But to really get started building busy forums, I believe free hosting is better choice

Like Spyros say, to start forums you should not use free forum hosting. I recomend you to use paid hosting with free scripts of forums of PHPBB or simple machine forums.
