Ofcourse yes, I have submitted my site to few directories and I am getting enough traffic from it. So I think its really worth to submit your site to directories.

I don't think it will help you with the pr unless your site and the directory are in the same niche..

Directory submissions have become essential part of SEO work. When a SEO person starts working on a URL, he first do directories submissions, and then he proceed with other steps of SEO.

I think Directory submissions do very poorly. These site's don't stick around long enough to do any good. As far as getting traffic they do no good. The only people visiting them are the admins trying to submit a link. How many times do you go to a directory to find a site? Probably never. Google has discounted links from these directories, they see them more as spam. I no longer waste my time with directory submissions. Theres better ways to get links.
DMOZ is one of a few good directories.

What would you suggest as an alternative to directory submissions then, Spike? I'd be interested to hear that. I think they have value as long as they're relevant to your website's niche and have a decent PR rating. Google may have discounted some but I don't think that's the case with all of them, is it?

DMOZ is well respected but takes a very long time to get listed.

Out of all those you have mentioned in the list directories submissions and bookmarking submissions are the power tools.

I hope you should remove Social bookmarking submissions too
