The answer depends on what you'd like to do with the VPS. The majority of our customers have unmanaged service, many of them made the transition from shared hosting. It's been my experience that most problems happen during their first few days with us as they migrate their websites and get used to the "feel" of an unmanaged VPS.
There's a lot of control panels out there that will make day to day tasks easier if you're unfamiliar with Linux commands. Some of these control panels come at a cost (CPanel) while some are free (Webmin, some versions of Kloxo, etc).
Since the answer lies in what you're doing with the VPS, why don't you give us a bit more detail on what you're trying to run ?
Depends on what you are trying to run. If its a web site I would install cpanel that way you do not have much manual configuration to do. Cpanel is only $10-$15 a month for a vps.
