What type of hardware configurations will my VPS need to be hosted on?
The answer to your questions depends on which system you're referring to -
The VPS "node" (which is the system that customers use) can be low end, Linux has very low hardware requirements, some distributions can run on 64-128MB of RAM. The smallest dedicated server that my company offers has 256MB of RAM and it's still pretty powerful when it comes to serving static HTML pages with Apache.
The VPS "host" server (which is the system that runs all of the VPS's) is typically a pretty powerful system, since the idea (at least from a service provider standpoint) is to "stack" as many nodes as possible onto the system before performance is degraded.
However, that doesn't mean that the VPS host *has* to be a powerful server. You could take a low end hardware configuration and still make it into a VPS server. For example, on a server with 1024 MB of RAM (1 GB) you could comfortably host two customer VPS's, one with 512MB and one with 384MB.
The reason you can't host two 512MB servers is due to the fact that each VPS you host gives some RAM overhead (64 MB to 128MB).
Hopefully that answers your question(s) ?
