I have been writing a lot of tutorials about modern web 2 designs but I think it is also nice to know how logos were designed before. In this tutorial I will be teaching you how to make a simple old style button that you have probably seen many times before. However, such buttons are very rare nowadays.
The final design will look like this:
Step 1
First of all, open an empty document. Dimensions are not very important. You can start with document of dimension: 325 by 167. Also, there is no need to fill the background with any color but I colored it with black jst so that it is easier for me to work. Now, you want to create the actual button. Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool from the side bar (or just press U on your keyboard). Now draw the button using that tool. You can choose the dimensions of the button as you want it to be. Now, Rasterize this new layer (Button layer) by right clicking on the layer and selecting Rasterize Layer. Here is what mine looks like now:
Step 2
Now you want to add some colors and good effects to the rounded rectangle to make it look more like an actual button. First of all, right click on the button layer and choose Blending Options. Choose Color Overlay and then pick the color that you want your button to have. I prefer to go with a light blue color. You might also want to do that right now and then change the color later on when you are doing this all by yourself. I picked this specific blue color: 0084ff. Now you want to give the button some solid look. Click on Bevel and Emboss in the blending options menu. Now also click on Contour box. Now you can click OK. This is what your button should look like now.
Step 3
Now you want to give a slight gradient look to the button just so that it looks a little nicer. Create a new layer and make a circle with it filled with white color. Do not make the circle very big. It should be of medium size. Change the layer type to OVERLAY. Now go to FILTER > BLUR > GAUSSIAN BLUR. Select the radius to be 35 pixels and place the blurry circle in the appropriate place. This is what it should look like now.
Step 4
Now you want to enter the actual text. I am going to use the text "Home". I will be using the font Vladimir Script. Type the text and place it appropriately on the button. However, it does not look too good yet. You need to give the text some solid look. First of all, Rasterize the text layer. Now right click on the layer and choose blending options. Then choose the box Drop Shadow. Also click on the box next to Bevel and Emboss. You can play with other effects but I think this looks good enough. Now you are done. This is the final button:
This button does not have a perfect design but it still looks good. These types of buttons used to be famous few years ago but you can still find them on some sites. If you play around with the design a little then you can make them really good. If you want you can add the Outer Glow option or play around with some gradient overlay to give the button a little more modern look. Also you might want to add a reflection to the button which will make it look really advanced. Actually, adding the reflection will be a really good idea. Try it yourself and see what works best for you.
