How to generate revenue with Facebook

I am new to online marketing and have heard that online sites are generating revenue using facebook. Can you guys share your experience? How does this work and how can someone like myself use facebook to generate revenue?

by creating a fan page of you site or simply just installing a facebook application.
i'm not successful at it though but i've read lots of ebooks discussing about how they earn thru facebook and that they need to have lots of friends.
