Optimizing your image can help your seo. Some of the traffic on my blogs are from images.

Good images from your domain people will steal and hotlink to, thats another inlink gained each time, also if you have lots of images you can dissallow hotlinking a couple of days a month and change all hot linked images to an advert for your site.

The thing I notice with images is, quite a chunk of traffic comes via Google image searches, when I check traffic sources on Google Analytics. So images are essential in my mind!!! And of course, it is important to use good keywords when naming the images..

The images themsevels do not directly help, but where images are used you must use the alt attribute in the img tag. There is NO alt tag.

That'll possibly confuse even more. I know because I teach in this area, and to start mixing the tags and attibutes is dangerous, leads to bad practice and errors.

Use alt attribute for <img> tag, the use of this attribute is to describe the image. Here is some tips putting your targeting keywords in alt attribute is good and describing the image by 2 or 3 sentences in that attribute is better. Take note: avoid the repeating keywords in alt attribute like <img alt=”search engine, search engine optimization, search engine marketing” > Google bot doesn't give the value to repeated keywords in alt attribute.
