A question about backlinks

i really fail to understand why there is so much talk about backlinks...! most of the SEO guys ignore backlinks from forums. are they really of some use. i dont really know much about linking

Backlinks are a measure of how popular you site is, you'll see this from SEO tools as the "Link Popularity". Not only do backlinks measure link popularity but are also used by Google as a factor in positioning your entr on a page of search results.

Well thats a first! I haven't heard that from any serious SEO guys. Backlinks from forums ARE useful and the number continualy grows as long as you kee contributing to the forum. Now lets clarify that, firstly you need t have a link in your signature, and secondly the signature links must NOT have the nofollow attribute in the link.

Hey alan! well, i have seen many SEO guys saying that they dont want links from blogs, and in some of the freelancers sites, and there plan, thanx for replying. actually this is what i have heard from most of the SEO guys say this thing. and there are some good freelancer sites, where some of the SEo guys specifically mention that they dont want links from blogs & forums...
and trust me these projects are little on the higher end.

great. if so the more backlinks you have, the more chances that your site will be in the first page result.
as to seo experts that do not want backlinks to thier site, they may not want others to have backlinks.
