We use a very effective SEO tool and making the ALT tags relevant has an importance factor of 3/5 which can make a big impact to the organic listing. I agree that it is very important to include relevant keywords within the ALT tags as every possible optimisation is an advantage of some sort.

They're not just good but essential where graphics are used. Run your page through any of the analysis packages and you'll see that the alt is rated quite highly.

Oh and just for the record alt are not tags, they form an arguement in the img tag.

Using alt tags in images can only bring you traffic if you have lots of graphics in your site.

But always using only main (1 or 2) keywords in all images alt tag can have negative impact, because webmaster will look like a spammer who is trying to stuff websites images with keyword just for SEO.

I've one site where I regularly get over 50% of traffic through image search. So alt data's essential. I used to ignore it, or rush entering it, thinking it a waste of time, but not any more.
