Well in early 2000's most webmasters used to achieve high ranking in search engines just by doing SEO in their sites. Unfortunately many of such websites have no unique and valuable contents at all.

But Google and other search engines have realized this and now they are looking for valuable fresh contents rather than just SEO. Optimizing your site can help only if you good contents.

SEO alone won't count. The content on your website matters a lot i guess. I saw a person, who started a website about a bot. This guy just kept updating daily.. and within a month, with absolutely NO ADVERTISING, NO SEOing, he got over 20k hits PER DAY! Now that's luck. It's content that matters after all i guess. Google indexes pretty fast.

Without SEO in a competitive market you will not be ranked for a certain keyword phrase. You need a mixture of great content and great seo.

Yes i guess i'm agree with you creating a very good and quality content can really drive traffic for your site without using some SEO techniques. But i don't think it can be number one on the results page if there's no SEO at all maybe just on the first page only but not on number one.

There are many factors why doesn't need seo to those number 1 in Search Engine because there are no competitors in internet marketing especially it's geographical location. I gonna mention the Coca Cola company, yes that brand is always number 1 in Search Engine if you check the backlink there is no backlinks and before the computer age Cocal Cola is the most popular softdrinks brand in the market. Another factor is Some site who are top one in Search Engine are given by Google Search Engine as Authority Site like Coca Cola.

If SEO is done very well, it can help a site gain visibility in search engines and visibility translates into sales. SEO is about relevancy in the eyes of search engines! The majority of web traffic is driven by the major search engines and without a search engine optimized website your site will not rank high.
