Meta search engines are sites that use other search engines to generate results. It searches a number of single search engines to return the best results. One of the most notable is dogpile.

Yeah I think dogpile is awesome, was told about it back when I was in highschool, wow, that really was a long time ago. Anyway meta searches are the best in my opinion, you get better results that actually are more suited to what you were looking for.
I think wikipedia willl define this best so check out this link to lean about What is Meta Search Engine

In a meta-search engine, you submit keywords in its search box, and it transmits your search simultaneously to several individual search engines and their databases of web pages. Within a few seconds, you get back results from all the search engines queried. Meta-search engines do not own a database of Web pages; they send your search terms to the databases maintained by search engine companies.

A meta-search engine is a search tool[1] that sends user requests to several other search engines and/or databases and aggregates the results into a single list or displays them according to their source. Metasearch engines enable users to enter search criteria once and access several search engines simultaneously
Depends on the topic. Google offers Google Scholar where you can search through scholarly articles. I would suggest looking up journals in the topic you are looking for, and from their search them for the specific topic you are looking for.
Metasearch is synonymous with federated search, broadcast search, and other terms. As others have said, metasearch engines search multiple search engines. Metasearch usually refers to applications like Dogpile that search the major search engines (e.g. Google, Yahoo!, Bing). In academic settings, the term "federated search" is commonly used to refer to metasearch engines that search scholarly journal databases.
I write several times a week about federated search in my blog so check it out if you want to know more about the subject.
