but many of the tools were not working.

I've got a few here's a sample;

http://www.domain-pop.com/ - checks backlinks with PR
http://ranks.nl/ - analyses keywords
host of keyword tools, mainly google adsense
and a host of tools at http://www.linkvendor.com.

I actually use the Adwords keyword tool the most. With that I know on which keywords I should base my content around.

My favorite is definitely Google's "Webmaster Tools".

Google webmaster tools are pretty good. I feel comfortable using there tools because most of what I'm gearing my sites up to do, is to be listed on search engines. Other than that I usually go from other peoples opinions on webmaster forums. I try to keep using new tools, but ones that other people are using too.

i am using only google webmaster, and yahoo site explorer.
none are important for seo maintenance.
