Alexa Ranking, I'm aware of that because I always prefer to generate the traffic of a website and build quality backlink to get top rank position in Search Engine.

Although Alexa ranking has a reputation of being inaccurate... I still do not ignore it. In fact, when it comes to looking for link exchange partners, I am looking for not just on Page Rank but also on high Alexa Ranking because those are mostly websites that are having good volume of traffic.

It's the only website ranking platform out there and though it is not totally accurate it still gives us a reference about how well a particular website is doing. Useful if you ask me.

No, it is not a tracking tool it is ranking of number of visitors each day. I have no idea the algorithm of Alexa ranking but if you have more visitors everyday you will get the top rankings in Alexa.
