Images in database using php?

that would look nasty and ugly, but does that function have image compression? would be nice if it turned that image into a string with ansi because i think thats the encoding language for compression, or just stick with my idea throw a few for loops on there and look at the image gdk php library and use those functions to grab hex fields for each pixel then slap em on the parser n then after the string is build write to mysql.

I generally dont store images in the database I would prefer to store image name and upload image in the folder
