yeh i think they are little helpful as social network sites have freedom to write anything ...u can advertize your forum or blog by putting links in big communities , they are best for getting refferals as they have message to bulk options(orkut have it) etc,,

Yes you are right. MySpace is the best example to promote stuff. Artists promote their music and benefit a lot. But there is a lot of spamming as well.
