What should be the effective strategy for the website promotion and marketing?

That would all depend on the niche of your website. On one hand it can be great for your site to only rely on outside promotion stuff like newspapers, mags, letters, etc. and on the other hand some sites are better suited just doing the online promotion stuff.

What kind of site are you referring to so i can get a better understanding?

If you want to drive easy traffic that would generate to sales, you better try PPC advertising. And of course optimize your website and do search engine optimization strategies like joining forums, traffic exchanges, free classified ads posting, social bookmarking, articles, banner exchanges, directory submissions.

Also joining Twitter, Facebook and Myspace can help a lot. If your just opening the site I somtimes buy traffic.

Put the site in your signature and post on forums like this. Forums and word of mouth seem to be the best ways of honest promotion these days.
