There are many avenues you can use to promote your site.

1) Web directories - Just search for them and submit your site then voila! It starts appearing in search engines.

2) Social Networking (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace etc) - It's really big these days and has been working for me. Create groups on FB, use your Twitter to market your sites by adding followers who will follow back.

3) Video Marketing - Use Youtube to promote your site by creating a video. In my case, I upload videos of my site's subject and always link my site in the video information. I even have my own Youtube channel for my site and have been gaining subscribers!

4) Forums like these. Enough said.

5) Link Exchanges - This is one I intend on doing more of because it really works. So you should try it too.

PS I also promote my site on Yahoo Answers but always noting it as a source.

To promote your site you need a lots of back link for your site. In my opinion the most important thing for promoting your site is content. You may get good page rank for a few time by doing seo or ppc. But you can't get it for a unlimited time. So try to do improve your content first. You can also attract visitor by promoting your webpage. Here you can submit attractive photo or upload video. Recently I have heard a news that google is becoming changing it self. Now after searching you can get best for web link for your help.. From now seo become ignored by google.
