I used to trust Alexa till I learned how they work. Only browsers using their toolbar will collect data, and its only available for IE6-7. and not everyone gets it. but that means us Safari and Firefox users are screwed.
However, a webmaster can take advantage of this to make their ranking better. So heres what i found from some site:
Here are 12 ways to improve your Alexa Ranking, while at the same time increasing traffic to your website.
1. BIGGEST ONE: Install an Alexa Toolbar and visit your site everyday. This does work, since I have installed Alexa my Alexa ranking has gone up.
2. Better yet, have a few friends install the Alexa toolbar and visit your site everyday.
3. Shift the focus of your site to a more Webmaster related theme. This makes sense, since webmasters are more likely to have the Alexa Toolbar installed.
4. Post in webmaster forums and add your signature in your post. (Just like you are doing here:popeye.
5. Write webmaster related topics and distribute them around the web. There are many sites where you can submit free articles, such as Article City.
6. Write an article about tips to increase your Alexa ranking. People looking for info to increase their Alexa Ranking likely have the Alexa toolbar installed. Right?
7. Buy ads on search engines to increase your traffic. This will increase your Alexa ranking.
8. Use Alexa redirection whenever you can. For example, when providing a link to my website, I could use http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?hostbidder.com. This Url will take you to Hostbidder, which happens to be my site. What a coincidence eh? Talk about selfish self promotion!
9. Submit your site to Directories, such as Dmoz and Yahoo Directory to increase your backlinks, thus your ranking on search engines. This leads you to, you guessed it, more traffic! Alexa loves traffic. Search engines love content and backlinks.
10. To obtain more of those valuable backlinks, politely request sites that are related to yours to place a hyperlink to your site on theirs. One way to do this is by placing a link to the competing site on yours, with a nice description of their site. Than notify them that you have added a link to their site. Flattery can get you a long way, and the webmaster might add a link to your site as a "thank you".
11. Write your own site reviews for the Alexa Top 100 sites and include your Alexa redirect URL.
12. Download the Alexa ranking button, traffic history graph, info links, and other traffic counters onto the page of your website that receives the most traffic.
Too bad they have nothing for Firefox or Safari.
