Netscape, vista plus others were all before google, the only reason google has done so well is that they indexed sites quickly, this was good for webmasters, so webmasters who are obviously seen as the experts on the internet would get their customers to check using google and tell them how great google is, the customers would tell their friends about this new search engine that some expert told them about, slowly seo developed from sticking the same keywords repeatedly in massive fonts in your meta tags to what it is today, not much different though really in reality, seo that is.
