Google is the best one amongst the search engines and it is popular because of its functionality, it provides every data you searched for, it have many datacenters.

I think google grew so fast and so powerful because they were one of the first to understand and harness the power of a simplistic style of technology. When others were trying to add bells and whistles to their sites, Google followed the K.I.S.S. theory and simply made it "work".

I have seen one movie recently where one character was looking for some one's details, and his dialog there was "You can not escape from Google" and find the required detail there, this really says all thing about Google.

I would say first of all the massive usage of google is due to 'Simplicity'. There were many SE's before google. but google maintained it simplicity and also it has used many techniques to have their users for years. There are more than 60% users who use Google as their SE.
