Thread: Google: The Yahoo Killer?

    Default Google: The Yahoo Killer?

Late in the 90s, when google came into being, it was known to get relevant results rather than showing sponsor ads in the results page. The search engine was so powerful, that it still till today, according to some is unbeatable. Any thoughts on this? I personally think that Google will rule the world some day..

Yes, it is true that Google had become a monopoly in the search engine marketing. It had overtaken most of the potential search engines and their search algorithms are one of the best in the internet search portals. It had accomplished a gigantic task in a short time and I hope that they would still remain unbeaten for the coming time to come.

Google isn't beating Yahoo! everywhere nor does it lead in Korea or Russia where local companies are favored, says TechCrunch on Feb 9. In Japan, Yahoo's leading them by a substantial margin.

Nielsen Japan reports that in October 2008, Yahoo Search saw a total of over 3.5 billion page views, while No. 2 Google trailed with 2.6 billion page views. According to a Comscore Japan ranking released in September 2008, Yahoo ruled the Japanese search engine market with a share of 51.2% (Google reached 39.0% in that month).
In fact the situation led to red faces at Google this last week when TechCrunch revealed they'd launched a pay per post campaign there to try close that gap- yes, Google, the guys who stomped all over bloggers for doing the same thing on their own blogs. Full article (make sure you scroll down to see it all).

Four days later there was a subsequent apology released by Google Japan and a fumbling around for justifications of the campaign before getting busted from a PR9 to a PR5. Bloggers everywhere that felt that particular pain of PR reduction must have got a real belly laugh out of that!

The aftermath in a nutshell: The campaign is now stopped, Google is embarrassed, apologizes and penalizes the Japanese site with a PageRank reduction.

Just a few hours after the Japanese version of the TechCrunch article went online Tuesday, Google Japan issued a half-baked, vague apology on the official Google Japan blog, basically saying the Japanese subsidiary was unaware of their own terms of service. The campaign was halted and Google Japan ordered their outside PR agency to remove all existing paid postings in question.

Remember when Google was first launced in the mid 90s that Yahoo was primarily a directory with a search added on. IT was Alta Vista that was the first major SE, and who owns this now, oh yes its Yahoo. What kept Yahoo going was the other services like the email, but Google wades in with its mighty resources.

Search engines only become the monoploy based on users, if everyone stopped using Gogle and switched to other Search engines, the monopoly is gone. Unlike you I hope that another Search Engine comes along and seriously takes on Googles monopoly, and breaks it, forcing real competition, and some more improvements and choice.

The difference between Google and its competitors that Google recovers quicker from its mistakes.

Amen to that, Alan! I'm sick of Google dominating everything and folks quivering in their boots over their PR. I'm one of the rare beasts that uses Yahoo.

I had high hopes for Cuil when I heard about it but it still appears to suck months down the line from its July launch. What a let down that's been.
