Thread: Website Plagiarism Search

    Thumbs up Website Plagiarism Search

I just wanna share this site where you can find out if your website is being plagiarized by searching for copies for it in the web. It's called CopyScape, and you can check it out at http://copyscape.com.

You can also prevent your site from being plagiarized by displaying their plagiarism warning button or banner on your site.

I have been using copyscape myself, of the poetry site...lol (yeah, it's so precious to me...)

but, teh point is, lets say someone copued and pasted this text elsewhere... i can with the copyscape fich who was it... SO??? so i see that it's www.blablabla.com, and what then? to contact them and ask not to steal again? if the owner is not from the USA he will sure send me to hell. let alone it cannot protect images and photos.

in my opinion, other than a lil` psyhological scaring, it does nothing...

CopyScape does appear to be a very useful service. I'd imagine that the CopyScape logo simply being on your site woud be a deterrant to many people. Lorelei a legal sounding cease and desist letter or even one coming from a solicitor might be enough to frighten scammers into removing the copied content.

Seeing the Copyscape logo on your site will discourage people from copying your site because they know you'll be able to find out. Lorelei, if ever you find anyone who's copying your content, and he doesn't respond to your email or doesn't remove the copied content, you could do what Hostbidder suggested, and you could also report him to his host, since some hosts have policies against plagiarism too on the sites hosted with them.

It's not the ultimate solution of course, but hopefully it will at least reduce plagiarism on the web.

Wow, that's a cool site. Fortunately, no one was copying my site :P But, I'll be sure to use it for later sites too. Thanks for the link!

How most people protect their site from plagiarism is by displaying a phony copyright logo. It works most effectively in discouraging rippers from plagiarizing the design and content.

But it's really easy to copyright everything. In order to really protect it. And it isn't that expensive. Just send $30 with your copyrighted work to the Library of Congress. More information and the address can be found at:

In my own experience, few people even pay notice to the copyright logo, or at least most people know when it's not a real copyright, so they still go ahead and copy the layout or the content. They think that they won't be easily caught, but if they know that you have a way to search for them, maybe that will discourage them from doing so.
