Hey guys, I am going to talk here about several ways that I think every administrator should employ to make his/her own forum successful. I have a forum as well and all these reasons come from my own experience.

Layout matches the content
The layout and the theme of the forum must definitely match. If the forum is about Barbies then it should be of pink color, if it is about plants and gardening then it should be of green color. You need to choose appropriate colors and themes for your forum so that the members feel comfortable at your forum. A forum is like a comfortable room where members want to stay and talk. If you make it uncomfortable and weird then believe me, no one will want to have conversations.

Participation
A forum can only work if the admin him/herself is willing to make it successful and that only shows when the Admin is active at his forum. The admin needs to keep things in order and always be available to help new members with any questions that they might have. Also, it is important to note that even though it is vital that the admin participate in his forum, however he should not overdo this. If the admin is the one who writes 70% of the posts, then it will not benefit anyone and the members will think that there are not enough active members and this will destroy the reputation of the forum.

Contests
It is not like before that people were enthusiastic and eager to join forums to have some useful discussions. Nowadays, you need to lure members to your forum to make it popular. Some consider it good while others hate this because it mostly promises short term members. Also, a lot of admins are worried about the quality of the posts. Nonetheless, several administrators employ this technique. Some contest ideas include "most posts", "referral contest", "Arcade Contest" etc. It is important for the admin to establish good structured rules without any loopholes because a lot of members will try to cheat.


Suggestions
When I started my own forum, I started it as a common person who was looking to help others. I told all members that this is their forum and that I really consider everyone's suggestions and they loved me for it. They gave me a lot of useful suggestions and I implemented the ones that I thought were useful. This is a great way for the admin to interact with forum members and make them feel that yes this forum belongs to the members as well and that their opinions are valued.

News/messages
Another thing to keep in mind is that you want to send some newsletters or messages to your members regularly every few weeks. This will make them realize that the forum is alive and growing. It will also keep them updated with latest information. This technique will also help you bring back those members that registered at your forum but never came back. But do not make this a habit and send messages to your members every few days. If you do that, then a lot of members will get frustrated and leave your forum.

So guys these are my tips to starting and maintaining a great forum. I have my own forum and it is not doing very well. Some of you might ask that I am talking about making a forum popular but my own is a mess and that is because I failed to accomplish step 2 - participation. I am so busy with other forums that I do not get enough time to spend on my own forum. I might be shutting it down or maybe not. I will have to see what the members say!
