Identity in CyberSpace - second change in identity
The second level of influence is the deviance of one?s identity from real identity in ?meatspace? to experimental identity in cyberspace. This type of change in one?s identity occurs when he/she is experimenting in creating a new identity in cyberspace. This is primarily prompted by the fact that it is incredibly easy to create and destroy identities in cyberspace according to one?s will unlike in real life. A bad reputation due to poor credit history in ?meatspace? is difficult to avoid but if one has bad reputation on a forum or a social networking site, it is very easy to start over again by just creating a new account.
Examples of experiments includes listening to a new genre of music from someone?s MySpace page and/or joining unusual groups like ?gangsters rock? or something similar that might be completely against your beliefs in real life (but not in cyberspace). Most of the times when an individual is going through this experimentation, he/she constantly accepts and rejects changes as they come along. For example, a country music fan might decide to listen to rap music and then later decide whether it suits him/her or not. If they like it then they will continue listening to more rap songs otherwise they will just move on and try something new. One reason for such experimentation could be peer pressure and the need to ?fit in the crowd?. You are forced to accept what others find suitable and acceptable and incorporate that in your lifestyle (at least in cyberspace).
These experimentations can have both positive and negative impacts on an individual. The individual mentioned above might like rap music after trying it and might realize that rap is the music genre that defines him more than country. This experiment my lead him to realize his true identity. For example, I am not very talkative in the real world and I certainly am not interested in arguing with others. Whenever someone starts an argument with me, I choose to simple surrender and accept their point of view. However, as an experiment, I tried debating online at different forums and discussion boards sometime ago. As a result, I discovered that I am actually a very good debater and I enjoyed arguing online with strangers. I got positive feedback from other people regarding my debating skills and this boosted up my confidence and encouraged me to do the same in real life. Now I always try to engage in arguments with people I meet daily such as my classmates and teachers.
However, experimentations can also have negative impacts. Sometimes creating a new identity by experimenting may influence your real identity negatively. As mentioned before, one of the reasons for experimenting with your identity is the necessity to adjust with your friends. In order to achieve this, one might start to experiment a lot of unusual things and incorporating them into their identity. This may lead to the individual and others both perceiving the individual in a different and incorrect way. For example, ?common? students try hard to stay up with the latest events on social networking sites to look like the ?cool? kids. If the ?cool? population decides to like the SuperPoke application on Facebook then all of the sudden it becomes popular and the ?common? students start using it even though they might not like it. Eventually, after some time those students will find themselves having a cyberspace identity that is very different from their real identity. By having these two different identities, they will not only be deceiving their friends but also themselves. Of course, these are example of only small scale experiments. Serious experiments can include bullying a kid online and hacking.
