This article details the steps to take for uninstalling or removing unwanted programs or software from your personal computer. Both Windows XP and Windows Vista already have built-in tools or utilities that should be capable of helping you in the uninstallation of unwanted programs or software.

You will have to double check on your program listing at least once every month to make sure that all of the programs or software there are the ones you have installed. This maintenance will guarantee that you have space on your hard drive. Therefore, your personal computer will be faster and will operate much smoother.

We all know that Safe Mode offers the cleanest and safest version of your system by running under minimum loading of programs. When you are free from numerous 3-party drivers/plugins and programs, it is true that you can better resolve system malfunction or uninstall unwanted programs. For stylish Windows Vista users, getting a clear view of Safe Mode is consequently becoming more and more imperative.

Two common ways are currently available to enter Safe Mode in Windows Vista:

    1. Press F8 right after the system is done bios self-inspection, you will see system booting mode menu, simply choose "Safe Mode" to get in.
    2. In normal system, click Start->Run, type "msconfig" (double quotation marks excluded) to launch system setting program, tick the Safe Mode in system setting/boot. This way you will be automatically brought into Safe Mode if you restart system.

Categories of Safe Mode in Windows Vista

    # Safe Mode: Only the very basic drivers and system files are loaded, no network support available.

    # Safe Mode with Network Setting: Safe Mode plus with support of network, though some network software could not be running properly. This mode is usually for network debugging and malware detecting.

    # Safe Mode with command prompt: The simplest Safe Mode with no network support available.

    # Low Resolution VGA Mode: In this mode you cannot change the resolution but can reinstall drivers. Obviously it is for detecting video cards failure.

    # Last Known Good Configuration: To reboot the system based on your most recent settings that worked: this mode aims to restore system when malfunction occurs, but when it comes to problems like files or drivers missing, this option will fail to help.

Frequently, in Vista you may find yourself in a situation that some files or folders could not be deleted as the system prompts "This program is currently being used". Don't hesitate! Go to Safe Mode, in where you can freely delete them because most of programs will not load so that you have the authority to fully control them.

If some unwanted programs are so lousy that even in Safe Mode they still cannot be put away, it is high time you resorted to some professional uninstall software, one of which I know can uninstall unwanted programs easily and swiftly, regardless you are in normal system or safe mode.

What I use most of the time is RevoUninstaller. I like that as I can get into the registry and pull out all traces of a program. If you are a novice, don't use it. I am a computer expert, so I know what the heck I am doing.
