How to convert visitors to members

What is probably the best way to convert visitors to members for an online community? I was thinking of trying out different landing pages. Thoughts?

Hmn...I've tried basically everything, asking friends, going into chat rooms, and spamming the hell out of our forums, Facebook, Myspace, Google even.

I think that there is definitely some truth to just getting the name out there everywhere. I was thinking that another way to increase conversion is to have like a front banner for guests other than default stuff for forums.

It might be worth a shot.

i think the best possible way would probably be to include your site in everything you make (TUTs, PSDs, etc.) or maybe to keep a link to your site in your sig space for every forum/a positive description of the site on the homepage for visitors
