I purchased a domain name with bravenet.com

I also have free hosting with bravenet.

I would now like to build a personal website.

However, I do not like bravenet's templates or website builder.

Could someone tell me:

* What is free hosting and what does this provide? (there are ads with bravenet)

* Am I tied into being hosted by bravenet because I purchased my domain name via them?

* Will I have to re-purchase the domain name via bravenet on renewal?

* Can I move away from bravenet- and what can I move and how do I do it?

* What elements can I move and why should I consider this?

* Is it better to pay for hosting?

* Any suggestions as to good, reasonably priced hosting companies?

* Can anyone suggest a good way of building a website (either with an online website builder or with easy-to-learn web design functions as I am a web design total beginner)?

Free = free, ie you do not pay for it. The quality of free hosting varies quite widely, some will restirict the time the site is up for with no accesses, others will not provide any server side scripting support. Others (like braveheart) use adverstsinstead of restictions use adverts to as a difference between free and paid.

Simply no, but you may have to transfer out.

Very likely, they have to pay for the domain name so you will eventually pay for it, the host is not a charity.

Yes, its an open market. There's usually instructions on the web host's site.

You can move everythin away, again check the host's site fro details. They may specify as some hosts do that the domain name must be registered through them (or their approved associates).

Not necessarily, you need to look at your requirements and what the host provides.

There are lots, do a Google search for web hosts or free web hosts.

Again there are free web builder packages availabale, you need not be tied to the hosts templates. Atternatively use of of the thousands of templates available on the web, or hire a designer/developer.

If you are serious about having your own website than you need good hosting... I also don't want to be on the same IP as all those people that got their web sites free and thus have no real skin in the game.
