The maximum period for domain registration is normally 10 years. You may find some registrar who offers registration up to 100 years, but in fact they renew the offer for their clients.

I know on many sites I visit it goes between 3-5-10 years. I think two year swould be enough to start with though mate, what if the idea doesn't work and you want to sell it later, no one will care it's registered for longer as they'll be looking for a cheap sale anyway.

depends upon the registrar and the TLD. For .com it's usually upto 10 years but some registrars register.me for a max. of 2 or 3 years
    so it depends.

Its generally a maximum of 10 years at a time, but as mentioned above it depends on the tld (country specific).

I have a domain that I am going to renew for 5 years, knock wood. I hadn't considered it an investment, before, but will probably consider selling it at some point.

the max is 10 years. would you register it for 10 years?

i think its better to register your site for a year, its within that period that you can see whether your site has this potential of going further. you'll have to consider some factors before registering it again.

i register my site for a year.
if only i can register it for 6months i will.
can we register a site for six months?
