Came across this some light reading about DMOZ.org (or the Open Directory Project), recommend this for a read. The former editors comments are quite revealing. The article can be found here.

Seen a good post - give some reputationKeeping the forum clean - SPAMMERS BEWARE!!
Thanks ill have to check into it, lately I have heard google is straying away from the open source directory ... However I am sure there are still many resources that will continue to use dmoz.
Google has been using the Open Directory Project less over the past year. I recall reading a blog item (I think it was inside google blog) that it was devaluing the influence had on sites for SERPs and PR.

I didn't read all the comments, but from what I read there is nothing new in those comments.
People have been saying for years
DMOZ is dead, but this article generated more comments than any other. Was that proof it was dead? For my money it proves that DMOZ is very much alive and well discussed.
DMOZ rejected my site. Sadly many do not understand the basis of DMOZ and glippitt tries to underline some of the reasons for its continued existence. It is not a listing service, editors do not have to look at the submissions if they don't want to do so. We are not there to look through submissions and list as many as possible. We try to categorise the internet, it is our hobby and we try and do this for the surfer looking for categorised sites. Page rank, how high or getting there, is of no interest to us.
Google is using us less. I realy am not bothered how much they do or do not use us. We are not Google fodder, it is entirely their choice to use us or not. But ask yourself "Why don't they just use a large paid directory or a large free listing service directory"? You might decide that payment or guaranteeing any listing to a site makes for a poor directory.
We need to get our act together. We all work in our spare time, we all work at what we want to do, at what pace we want to do.
Ultimately the reason for our giving up of our spare time is because we want to build a directory of unique sites and if I promise not to criticise your stamp collection, or butterfly collection or coin collection, if I promise not to tell you how you have to lay them out or indeed which ones you can or can't collect or how fast you have to collect them will you promise not to tell me about my collection. Mine just happens to be web sites and my hobby collecting, collating and categorising them. Yes I am a DMOZ editor and am proud to be so. I collect sites as my hobby.
I am a DMOZ editor, but my opinions are mine they do not represent DMOZ staff or management.
Well you does not get any visitor from DMOZ just got a good backlink for your website
I have once edit contents in botw and Dmoz was our guide to it. DMOZ is there for years.
sites listed in there are just particular pages or topics in the site such as - if you are saerching for particular fish - then dmoz or botw is a good place
