Thread: Do you backup?

  1. #1

    Exclamation Do you backup?

In this day and age, regular backups should be a daily thing. I never used to worry about backing up but I realised the kind of information I would loose due to my stupidity.

Now I update a backup of my files to a server in Dublin at 11pm everynight. This backup is then copyied to a server in the UK and one in Galway I believe. The files are also encrypted for privacy.

Well, there's my story, but what about you? Do you backup?

why to back up to another server?

I know you can lose all thanks to mere stupidity, but ain`t automatic backup a bit dangerous? I mean instead of "back-up" the stupid machine can just send your files away (favourite FTP`s trick) and you would be left with nothing... (god forbid, of course)

"another server"?? I am talking about my files on my home computer here which includes all my websites. I don't think it would just mess up and if it was unable to complete a backup it would notify you, it is an independant program that runs in the background.

oh, now I see, I just thought you mean one server in Dublin and another in the UK... I saw the back-up option in the my computer panel, but never used it. I weekly burn all my updates to a re-writeble CD, just to make sure I won`t lose all my precious graphics.

But that back-up, how do u actually make it? and how secure is it?

    thanks

As of right now, I don't; my host does that for me... In a few days, after I get to my own VPS, I'll need to start backing up on my own... and that'll probably be done on a daily basis.

It's with a company, you pay for the backup space and install the software. You can then set it when you want to backup and just leave it. It is secure as it encrypts the files before it sends them off I think.

I'm afraid I'm one of the many who don't back up data as much as we should. All my sites are backed up daily by my hosting providers but the data on my home PC is rarely backed up. When I do do a back up I simply save it to a CD ROM. My work PC has a daily automated back up to tape.

lol Michael, good point. I recommend that you get a portable USB device meant to store large amounts of information and they fit on your keychains. They come in 64MB, 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, and even 1 GB models. Lexar Media markets these and a 128MB one is only about $30 USD so they are very affordable. Go to Lexar's official site for more.

most of the paid hosting providers provide backup for some lil charge they do the backups for u and incase of any accident, u can always ask for the copy.

if u r transferring to another server, i say, maintaining mirrors is the best solution.

there are many mirror scripts available in php which update very often
