Search Engine Optimization vs Search Engine Marketing

Rate this Entry
There seems to be confusion around what is the difference search engine optimization and search engine marketing and this post is an effort to clarify it.

Search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your website (on-page and off-page) to ensure it ranks well on the natural SERP on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing for targeted keywords. the natural or organic SERPs are the top 10 sites which show up on Google when you search for any term.

Search engine marketing on the other hand is a mechanism of advertising your ads on sponsored sections of search engines (these sections are generally clearly marked as sponsored ads). This generally work on a pay per click model.
