What are the differences between the ASP languages?

I hear many terms related to ASP-
ASP.NET
ASP
.NET
DotNet
and I think some more.

I would assume .NET and DotNet are the same.

I am an experience web developer with a background in PHP/JSP.

What are the differences, purposes, open/closed-sourceness, and syntax styles of all the above, and any of their neighbors I didn't mention?

And if Asp.net and asp are different then which one is the best.

ASP.NET is the correct name, others include .NET, DotNet which are all the same. .NET is upto version 4 (as of writing this). ASP.NET was releaed in 2002 and is the successor to ASP (commonly known as ASP Classic or vbScript). Many sites are still built in ASP Classic but it is not recommended as support was stopped a long time ago.
