Many affiliates start with setting up a website, put a couple of banners and links on their web pages, and hoping that sales will come. After couple of weeks without any sales, they will conclude that affiliate marketing doesn't work and give up.
Actually, affiliate marketing does work and it's a fantastic way to make money online, but you must be aware of some affiliate marketing mistakes made by many affiliates and learn how to avoid them.
Mistake 1. Not Starting With Your Passion
Always start by choosing a market you have a passion in or at least have some interest in. Don't goes into a market because you think there is a lot of money to be make there and not having any interest in it. Affiliate marketing is a long term business. You are required to writes about the market you are in and the products you are promoting. It'll be a lot easier if you are writing about something you interested in rather than something you have not. You'll be much happier and your affiliate business will last.
Mistake 2. Not Doing Your Market Research
Never jump into a market without first doing some market research. Not only must you have passion in the market you choose, you must also make sure that there is money to be made. Doing a proper market research is important because it determines just how profitable the market. You want to find out what your target market is looking for? What are their problems and needs? What are the solutions available to them? And will they pay for the products you are promoting?
Mistake 3. Selling Unrelated Products
A big turn off to everyone online, is being offered a product that we are not interested and totally unrelated to us. You don't want to do that to your visitors. Only promote products that are related to the context of your website. For example, if your website is about babies, you can promote baby's products, but never promote web hosting on the same website. You'll come across as a nuisance and risk losing your customers.
Mistake 4. Hype Up Your Product
Honesty is the best policy. When you write a review about a product, be honest about your opinion. Speaks about its features, what it can and cannot do. Speaks about its benefits, what the user can get out of it. Never hype up a product more than what it is. If you never used the product, say so. Your visitors can see through a lie and will never buy from you or any one they see as dishonest.
Mistake 5. Not Building a Relationship with Your Visitors
The money is in the relationship with your visitors. This is why you want to encouraging your visitors to join your mailing list, so that you can build a good relationship with them. No one will buy from you if they don't know who you are and don't trust you. You must treat your list like you are treating a good friend. You share with them your findings and you help them whenever you can.
Mistake 6. Not Tracking Your Result
Always track everything on your website. You want to know how well your website is doing and how can you improve your conversion rate. Try changing one thing at a time and track the result. If the change improves your click through rate or conversion rate or both, you want to keep it; else you discard it and try again.
Mistake 7. Giving Up
Affiliate marketing is not a get rich quick scheme. If you are not ready the do any hard work and not getting a pay check for months, affiliate marketing is not for you. Affiliate marketing is not difficult, but it does require a lot of hard work and determination. Many internet marketers take months learning, trying and testing different things before they get any solid result. The biggest mistake you can ever make is giving up without trying your best.
