I generally favour keywords that return less than 2 million results. It is about striking a nice balance between search volume and competition. Sometimes, keyword tools like wordtracker etc do not tell the full story. Nothing beats some hands-on research.

I use google keyword tool.. it works good... but you need to make some analysis before choosing the keyword... its better to choose the keyword which doesn't have much competition..
