How can I make money from affiliate programs?

I am looking to get started in affiliate marketing but I am not sure where to start. I am looking for basic step-by-step directions to get me started making money as I could sure use the extra income. Can you please help or point me in the right direction at least?

An easy way to start making extra income right away is to make a hub page or squidoo lens based on one product--an up-and-coming one is best.

make sure the product is available on amazon or via another company with an affiliate program. Write some interesting content about the product. Interweave your affiliate links to the item in your article.

Drive traffic to your lens or hub through search engine optimization (add the right tags, tell people about your hub in forums, bookmark your Web 2.0 site on Digg, reddit, etc). For hubs and lenses, the more visitors you have initially, the more people will come to your site. These people will probably click on your link and buy your product.

The idea is to simply market the products for the company trying to sell them and make a commission off sales. But you dont want to spend a lot in advertising or anything so you usually want to go the route of free and cheap marketing only.

Step 1 - Create a place to show off the product/service you are marketing

If the company doesn't provide you with a landing page (or even if it does since many other people will be using that same page) you will want to make your own. I suggest creating a keyword-rich environment to place the commission generating links in. You can make a splash page highlighting the product or service and buy the domain and hosting for it (should be cheap) or blogs are easy to create and usually very search engine friendly, so this might be an easy way to start. Wordpress is one I use sometimes.

Step 2 - Get SEO traffic to your product/service page

For this part, It's best to have a reverse search tool to find out how many people are searching for certain terms and choose the best ones to be sure are placed strategically in your content on your marketing page. Getting to the top of search engines can be a hard and tedious project but if you do your keyword research and know how to properly add meta data to a website, you should be alright.

Step 3 - Get additional free traffic

Submit your page to all the search engines you can. Submit to as many directories as you can. Write articles with links to your marketing page and submit them to various places online. Create Youtube videos that encourage users to visit your page and try the product/service, or even post short descriptions and links in social networks.

Step 4 - Pay only for the lowest cost paid marketing (optional if the other methods arent working good enough)

Also a good time to pull out the reverse search tool is for researching keywords for search marketing. This time you want to find the keywords that no one else is using but still have a lot of traffic. Grab those and put a tiny bid on them. They say that keyword phrases with 3 or 4 words are most likely to be buying customers. You have to be careful here because if you get a lot of traffic and no one buys, you can lose a lot of money. Any form of paid marketing is a risk, but if you do it right and get the best traffic for the lowest price, it can be very rewarding.

The best way I know is to find a problem that people are dying to get answers for then give it to them. The product that you sell must have the answer to their problem.

These people must have their hair on fire

The cheapest and more effective way to earn is by writing articles. eg. hub pages, ezine, go articles, us free ads, etc.

These are the few that are very effective in article writing and can get your article at the top of search engines without you spending money to get to the top pages in Google, Yahoo, etc.

Before you write your article, make sure you keyword research (google keyword tool). To be exact, make sure the keyword is under 5,000 and a little under 1,000. This is very important, because people who search for your keyword will most likely find you .

It also depends on the content of your website. Mine is of educational direction, therefore I am using Babylon affiliate and get paid for every downloaded software. So, better choose affiliates based on the content.
