Also, I think one other reason why it's getting harder to make money with adsense is because adwords bidders are more and more aware of the low conversion rates of content network ads. Many adwords guides advise adwords users to just turn off the content network, at least in the beginning.

It would be appropriate to note though, that I've found the content network to be profitable in some cases, especially if you have a good ad and a product that is NOT so specific that it only caters to a very small audience.
